NEPHELE, a Horizon Europe-funded Research and Innovation Action project, is excited to announce its 1st Open Call, inviting Industrial SMEs and Mid-caps to participate in the extension of the Virtual Object Stack (VOStack) and the development of Virtual Objects (VOs), composite Virtual Objects (cVOs), and Digital Twins (DTs). This initiative aims to foster innovation in the realm of hyper-distributed applications across the Cloud-to-Edge-to-IoT spectrum.
NEPHELE's 1st Open Call offers a unique opportunity for companies to contribute to the development of the Virtual Object Stack and associated components. The submission period opens on November 1, 2023, at 9:00 (CET, Brussels Time) and will close on January 10, 2024, at 17:00 (CET, Brussels Time). 1st Open Call Details:
NEPHELE will allocate up to €608,000 among up to 8 selected SMEs/Mid-caps to develop Virtual Objects (VOs), composite Virtual Objects (cVOs), Digital Twins (DTs), and generic backend functions. Participants will benefit from this opportunity in various ways, including:
- Participation in a 6-month support program.
- Receiving a fixed lump sum of up to €76,000 per entity.
- Technical mentoring during the support program.

NEPHELE is seeking single Industrial SMEs, including startups, and Mid-caps that are interested in developing Virtual Objects, composite Virtual Objects, Digital Twins, and generic functions to extend the Virtual Object Stack (VOStack).
About NEPHELE:
NEPHELE is a Horizon Europe-funded Research and Innovation Action project operating under the theme "Future European platforms for the Edge: Meta Operating Systems." Its mission is to facilitate the efficient, reliable, and secure orchestration of hyper-distributed applications spanning from the Cloud to Edge to IoT. This project aims to remove existing interoperability barriers in the convergence of IoT technologies with cloud and edge computing orchestration platforms. NEPHELE integrates automation and decentralized intelligence powered by 5G and distributed AI technologies.
Key Objectives of NEPHELE:
The primary objective of NEPHELE is to design and construct a Virtual Object Software Stack (VOStack) to address interoperability and convergence challenges in the compute continuum. This software stack will enable the management of distributed applications seamlessly.
Integration with NEPHELE:
Selected participants will be required to integrate their solutions into the NEPHELE ecosystem and adopt the NEPHELE architecture, all of which must be made available as open source contributions and offered as part of the NEPHELE ecosystem.
