KER/service optimizes the routing of cargo containers from the Container terminal yard or Depo area to different Container Freight Stations (CFS) within the port, where the cargo is stuffed/stripped, and vice-versa. The service provides technological means to collect multiple operational and environmental data (based on NEPHELE platform), including video-based monitoring of the depo area, and monitoring performance of data network. The outcome of the service is therefore access and visualization of data collected, and cargo containers delivery plan based on relevant data collected. While only certain data is in the function of optimizing cargo containers routing, other data (e.g., environmental data, data on network performance) supports the business process indirectly, thus contributing to further overall improvements of business processes, work safety, environment protection, etc.
KER will allow for improvements of partners product portfolio (when matured enough), while it will directly contribute to operations in LK. For UoM, KER represents an asset and know-how for further research and educational activities.
Initially, the KER will be exploited through further research and development towards higher TRLs, and, if proved successful, will finally enter the productization phase. The research and development phase will also include cooperation with external industrial partners in order to properly address industry vertical needs.
The service/KER builds on top of multiple types of data collected/available in the port, and with the help of AI-driven algorithms exploits synergetic potential of data to produce optimal cargo container routing delivery plans. As delivery plans nowadays mainly consider only schedules of vessels, trucks availability and customers’ time plans, involving more relevant data/factors which helps at the process optimization, goes beyond current state of the art. Additionally, the service also goes beyond SotA technologically by utilizing Cloud-Edge-IoT approach through the NEPHELE platform.
At the end of the NEPHELE project, KER achieves TRL 6. It is expected further development will take at least 4 years before the KER can be commercialized, given market conditions and industry needs will evolve according to current assumptions.
KER primarily targets the smart ports market. The main opportunities are in line with pressing needs for digitalization of logistics/ports as one of key priorities required to maintain ports’ (global) competitiveness, while recognizing that more than half the value of goods imports to the EU and over 40% of goods exports from the EU go through ports. Otherwise, increase in ports digitalization and involvement of smart technologies has already been seen as a response to past supply chain crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemics and later with the war in Ukraine, therefore, further investment in digitalization bringing benefits to the business, is expected.
ports and logistics industry verticals
Routing of cargo containers within the port area is one of key operations in the port handling cargo containers. Optimization of this process brings multiple business and operational benefits, starting with cost optimization and improved efficiency as a consequence of reduced routing times, higher truck/forklift utilization, reduced delivery errors, reduced CO2 emissions, as well as improved workforce safety and reduced potential business process interruptions.
