We present NEPHELE Use Case 2: AI-assisted logistics operations based on the digital twin of the port. The Port of Koper handles millions of containers annually. Behind this bustling activity lies a complex logistics challenge affecting efficiency, costs, and environmental impact. Every day, cargo containers must be efficiently routed from terminal yards to container freight stations within the port area. Traditional logistics operations face critical challenges: suboptimal routing leading to delays, higher CO2 emissions from inefficient vehicle utilization, limited real-time visibility, and reactive operational decisions. Current best practices rely on manual planning and static schedules, lacking the real-time intelligence needed for optimal decision-making. The NEPHELE solution targets measurable improvements:
- Up to 5% faster delivery times.
- Up to 5% improvement in vehicle utilization.
- A maximum of two delivery errors per day.
- Up to 5% reduction in CO2 emissions.
- Reduced operational costs and improved workforce safety.
At the heart of our solution is a comprehensive digital twin, a real-time virtual replica of the entire port ecosystem. Our digital twin operates across five intelligent layers:
- Data collection from IoT sensors and cameras.
- AI-powered processing using cloud and edge computing.
- Interactive visualization.
- Predictive simulation.
- Intelligent decision support for automated coordination.
Advanced AI algorithms analyze multiple data streams to optimize container routing, considering safety rules, cargo sensitivity, and real-time traffic conditions. This provides intelligent decision support for automated coordination. The system is built on cutting-edge technology including a private 5G network, industrial IoT devices, and our NEPHELE Virtual Object Stack (VOStack). NEPHELE harnesses time-sensitive networking to prioritize traffic between IoT devices and virtual objects with the aim of meeting strict data delivery deadlines. Time-sensitive networking is activated on 5G IoT gateways and controlled through sophisticated schedule computation mechanisms executed within the VOStack. NEPHELE implementation involved comprehensive infrastructure deployment:
- IoT devices and gateways were installed on port trucks, STS cranes, and stationary locations throughout the port.
- A dedicated private 5G mobile network ensures reliable, low-latency connectivity.
- Advanced data center infrastructure with edge computing nodes handles massive data streams for real-time AI processing.
The NEPHELE platform integrates all system components into a unified environment. Advanced AI algorithms continuously analyze data streams to optimize container routing, considering safety rules, cargo schedules and sensitivity, and real-time traffic conditions. The routing optimization tool provides operators with intelligent recommendations for maximum efficiency. Real-time monitoring encompasses multiple operational aspects:
- Port assets detection and tracking provides complete equipment visibility.
- Environmental monitoring tracks wind speed, air quality, temperature, and weather conditions with alerts.
- Mobile network performance monitoring ensures real-time network visibility and optimal 5G connectivity.
- Energy consumption tracking supports sustainability goals through detailed power usage analytics.
- Optional satellite backhauling provides redundant connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted operations in tactical conditions.
- Continuous connectivity performance monitoring optimizes network infrastructure.
- Traffic flows monitoring using AI-assured cameras provides real-time monitoring and analysis of port traffic patterns, identifying congestion points and optimization opportunities.
The NEPHELE implementation has delivered measurable improvements across all operational areas. Real-time monitoring, AI-driven optimization, and integrated data analytics have transformed port logistics. Initial results show promising efficiency gains, successful container routing optimization, and enhanced real-time environmental monitoring capabilities. NEPHELE's successful implementation demonstrates the potential for digital twin technology in port operations worldwide. The solution provides a scalable foundation for future enhancements and expansion to other port facilities.
